Important dates
-
May 1st, 2026: First day for candidates to file a nomination paper for the office of Mayor or Councillor in Mattice – Val Côté, or as a school board trustee. A candidate’s electoral campaign begins once their nomination paper has been filed.

August 21st, 2026: End of the nomination period. Candidates have until 2 PM to file their nomination papers, to change office, or to withdraw their nomination. Nominations or withdrawals cannot be accepted after 2 PM.

October 26th, 2026: Voting day. Voting places will open at 10 AM and close at 8 PM. Additional information regarding voting events will be available at a later date.

November 15th, 2026: Members of Council elected in the October 26th elections take on their new roles and responsibilities as they form the new municipal government.
Information for voters
In order to vote, one must be a qualified elector.
On voting day, you must be:

A resident of the Municipality of Mattice – Val Côté, or an owner or tenant of land in the Municipality, or the spouse of such owner or tenant;

A Canadian citizen;

At least 18 years old; and/or
-
Not prohibited from voting by law.
You CANNOT vote if you:

Are serving a sentence;
-
Are a Corporation;
-
Are acting as executor or trustee or in another representative capacity, except as a voting proxy; and/or
-
Have been convicted of a corrupt practice under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
Voter Identification
All electors are required to present a piece of identification in order to receive a ballot at their voting place. The identification must show your name and address. Photo identification is not required.
Are you on the voters list
The next municipal election will be held Monday, October 26th, 2026. Elections for municipal governments in Ontario are held every 4 years on the fourth Monday of October. As of January 15th, 2024, Elections Ontario has taken over responsibility of voters lists for Municipal and School Board Elections in Ontario.
We encourage you to confirm that you are on the Voters List as soon as possible.

Additional ID is required to update, add or remove voter information. Voters wishing to be added to the voters list or update their information will be required to provide a piece of identification with both their name and Ontario home address.

Municipal Elections - Joint Compliance Audit Committee (2022)
The Municipalities of Hearst, Mattice-Val Coté, Opasatika, Val Rita-Harty, Kapuskasing, Moonbeam, Fauquier-Strickland and Smooth Rock Falls are seeking individuals to serve on the Joint Compliance Audit Committee. The Committee is responsible for considering applications for compliance related to the municipal elections.
The Committee will be composed of three members with:

Commitment to learning and understanding municipal election campaign financing rules;
-
Analytical and decision-making skills;
-
Experience working on committees or similar settings;
-
Availability and willingness to attend meetings;
-
Excellent oral and written communication skills; and
-
Bilingualism is considered an asset.
Term of the Committee is December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2026.
Application forms are available from the Office of the Clerk in each of the municipalities. Applications are to be returned no later than 4:00 p.m. Friday September 16, 2022 to the attention of the Clerk of the Town of Kapuskasing, 88 Riverside Drive, Kapuskasing, Ontario P5N 1B3.
